Graece προπύλαια seu πυλεὼν, vestibula erant, seu ingressus templi adeoque post Pronaum, in Aedibus sacris Gentilium, et post Narthecem, in Christianorum. In Graecorum enim Aedibus sacris haec erant, Pronaus, primum πρόδομος, deinde Προπύλαια, sequebatur ipsa Aedis cella, ὁ σηκὸς etc. Πυλῶναςβασιλικοὺς iidem vocabant, Latini Regias. Vide Salmas. ad Solin. p. 1216. et 1218. et infra voce Vestibulum. Ornabantur illa exquisitissimis Artificum optimorum operibus. Sic in Propylaeo Atheniensium, ex marmore Charites. Socratis opus, memorantur Plinio, l. 36. c. 5. et ibidem in Minervae delubri Propylaeo, pinxit Protogenes nobilem Paralum et Hemionida, cum parvularum navium parergis, apud eund. l. 35. c. 10. Nec fastigiis eorum suum defuisse cultum, dicemus infra, voce Vultur.
